In a powerful effort to preserve and promote Yoruba culture among the younger generation, Ejalonibu Exponentials proudly introduces the Omo Yorùbá Ními (OYNM) Cultural Contest, a prestigious youth-focused cultural competition designed for Junior Secondary Schools across Southwest Nigeria.
Established as a platform for cultural education, identity, and creative expression, the contest celebrates the richness of Yoruba language, traditions, arts, and moral values. More than just a competition, OYNM is a cultural movement aimed at empowering young people to proudly embrace their roots and declare with confidence: “Omo Yorùbá Ními” — I am a child of Yoruba heritage.
The maiden edition of the contest will officially begin in Ekiti State in 2026, with expansion plans across all Yoruba-speaking states including Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Lagos State.
Building Cultural Pride Through Competition and Creativity
The OYNM Cultural Contest will begin at the Local Government Area (LGA) level, where participating schools will compete for the prestigious title of “Aṣojú Ọ̀dọ́ OYNM” (Youth Cultural Ambassador).
Through structured competitions, students will demonstrate their knowledge, talents, and creativity in three major categories:
- Creative Arts
- Cognitive Arts
- Traditional Skills

Category A: Creative Arts – Showcasing Talent and Cultural Expression
The Creative Arts category focuses on performance, oral tradition, and artistic expression.
Yoruba Poetry / Oríkì Presentation
Oríkì, the traditional Yoruba praise poetry, represents identity, ancestry, and storytelling. This segment encourages students to perform original or traditional Oríkì in fluent Yoruba language.
Objectives include:
- Promoting Yoruba language fluency
- Reviving oral storytelling traditions
- Building confidence and public speaking skills
Participants will be judged based on fluency, creativity, cultural depth, and stage presence.
Cultural Dance and Music Performance
Students will showcase authentic Yoruba cultural dances accompanied by traditional drumming. This segment highlights:
- Cultural authenticity
- Rhythm and coordination
- Traditional costume representation

Traditional Yoruba Drumming
Participants will perform using traditional Yoruba drums, demonstrating mastery of rhythm, cultural authenticity, and stage performance.
